I checked in with nothing but two suitcases, 31kg in total. That was my whole life now, fitting into 31kg. Everything else, gone.

On the plane, I had a short conversation with a Japanese stewardess and I found myself reflecting on kizukai and other things Japan had taught me, on everything I was now leaving behind.

I was flying out of Japan for good. The country I grew up in, the country that shaped who I was, was no longer mine to stay in.
